Early ADS signed “Grover Cleveland, Comr. of Deeds for Buffalo,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.25 x 11.75, September 9, 1862. Chattel mortgage agreement between Joseph Benjamin and Edward P. Beals for a “pine sided Lake Canal Boat,” to which Cleveland adds a lengthy statement of approximately two hundred words on the second and third pages. Cleveland writes, in part: “The nature of the claim enacted by virtue said chattel mortgage is as security for the payment of money to become due upon the promissory notes in said mortgage described: that said claim arose about the time of the date of said mortgage and originated in a sale of the Canal Boat mentioned in said mortgage from the said mortgagee to the said Joseph Benjamin…The amount of said promissory notes being the sum of Two Thousand dollars.” Signed at the conclusion by Cleveland. In fine condition, with small and unobtrusive tape-repaired separations to expected storage folds. Just twenty-five years old at the time he penned this document, Cleveland had been admitted to the bar three years earlier. Although the Civil War raged in the South, he avoided conscription by hiring a substitute and was able to dedicate himself to practicing law throughout the 1860s.
