ALS, one lightly-lined page, both sides, 5.75 x 9, State of New York Executive Mansion letterhead, March 21, 1883. Cleveland writes Marshall Bright. In part: “I have today received your invitation to attend the celebration of the anniversary of the birth of Washington Irving. I am sorry to be obliged to deny myself of that pleasure on account of official duties. Irving is pure life, and this precious carton of its later time and benefit to the world, and if he who writes to instruct and educate, while he directs, is entitled to grateful remembrances. We do well to celebrate the birth of our beloved countryman. I hope the observance of this anniversary will long continue to remind all who read, of one who…should always live in their love and admiration.” Scattered creasing, brushing to a couple of letters, tiny chip along the left side, and show-through from writing on opposing sides, otherwise fine condition.
