Samuel Yellin is considered to be America's preeminent iron artist. His work was commissioned for some of our most historic building including the fabulous entrance gates at St. Patrick's cathedral. In the 1920s, Edgar Kaufman commissioned Benno Janssen to build his family an important residence outside Pittsburgh that was called La Tourelle. Janssen enlisted Yellin, who went to the site, set up his forge, and turned out a houseful of beautiful and functional hardware. Several years later Edgar Kaufman sat in this house with another architect named Frank Lloyd Wright and drew up plans for a country house that would be called Falling Water. The hardware offered here was removed from LaTourelle when the house was renovated in the 1960s. The lot is comprised of three hinges and an upper and a lower jamb bolt. The more decorated jamb bolt with the dragon head is signed by Yellin on one side. The jamb bolts are about 11" long. The hinges are 4" x 4" and retain their original boiled linseed oil finish. Note the handwork on the knuckles as well as the top of the hinge pins. The jamb bolts are likewise hand decorated with typical Yelling motifs. Each piece stands by itself as a small masterpiece in iron, and together there is everything needed to hang a door. We give this lot a grade of 9.
