Lot of six from The Grotto: 1) Inscribed slug WARD & FRYE THE GROTTO 222 D ST. MARYSVILLE, on the one pint clear shoo-fly pocket flask. Footed base, with small chip, a neatly applied, un-ground, screw top, also with some chipping. There are air vents and a few bubbles, but bottle is in excellent condition. 2) Slug marked GROTTO SALOON W.W. WARD PROP. MARYSVILLE, CAL. on this picnic style, clear glass bottle. Footed base, air vents on the shoulders and a neatly applied single collar, un-ground top. Some bubbles and staining. 3) Slug marked W.W. WARD GROTTO MARYSVILLE on this clear glass picnic, with single collar, un-ground top, footed base, and air vents on the shoulders. 4) "Good for 50 cents in Trade" Grotto token. Reverse marked WARD & FRYE. A hole has been punched through it, and is rough on the front, clearer on the reverse. 5). "Good for Five Cents in Trade" token, front reads "The Grotto", reverse reads "Ward & Frye". There`s a hole punched into the center , but piece is in very good condition. 6). "Good for Free Drink or Cigar" token. Reverse reads "THE GROTTO, 222 D ST. MARYSVILLE, CAL. W.W. WARD PROP. Very nice condition. William W. Frye formed a partnership and opened The Grotto Saloon in 1907. Previous to this, Ward was the sole owner. In 1914, Frye purchased Ward`s half of the saloon and kept it in operation until 1918 when Prohibition spelled the end [Ref: Picnics, Coffins and Shoo-Flies, John L. Thomas, 1974].
