This is a very rare dance rattle from the Gros Ventre Atsina Native American Indians of Montana in the mid to late 19th century (1850-1890). The piece was used for the Star Dance, a dance that was one of the rich ceremonies unique to the Gros Ventre Indians (E.S. Curtis was the first to document the dance and recorded it on a wax cylinder at Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, Montana in 1907). The piece shows Buffalo hide parfleche with excellent ocher mineral polychrome paint and trade clothe in blue and red. The piece also has various turkey feathers adorning the top. This is a very well preserved early piece of the Gros Ventre History and is in good museum quality condition. Provenance: From a private large Native American collection in France. Measures 10"L x 5.25" with an additional 14.5"L trade clothe accent.
