Offered for public purchase is this fantastic authentic set of fully top beaded moccasins from the Gros Ventre Native American Indians of Northern Montana. The moccasins date to the first quarter of the 20th Century and show a wonderful quality construction. The circa 1900 set is sinew and trade thread sewn, a true attribute to its early age. The set show an Indian tanned Great American Bison Buffalo hide construction having exceptional early period correct glass trade seed beadwork in a fantastic traditional geometric design. The soles are constructed from early saddle harness leather traded to the Gros Ventre from the Whites. The beads include such colors as chalk white, semi-transparent green, cobalt, orange, semi-transparent, and red. The moccasins show a very fine geometric pattern in a having a stepped tepee like design. The set shows a very fine construction and large size along with only slight bead loss. The moccasins show the correct patina and age to be from circa early 1900 including a fine worn foot print on the sole (the soles show heavy signs of use with some worn through spots and separation of the sole, a true sign of age). The set also shows a fine beaded bifurcated (forked) tongue. The Gros Ventre Indian tribe (also referred to as the A'ani, A'aninin, Haaninin, and Atisina) are a Algonquian speaking people from the North Central Montana region. The Gros Ventre's migrated to Montana in the 18th Century due to pressure from the Ojibwe Indians. Measures overall 10.5"L sole that is 4" across approx. The heel is 3.5"H when elevated. Provenance: From a Northwestern Montana collection. A similar quality set of Gros Ventres moccasins from the 19th Century was sold for $3,900 at our 8/5/2017 auction.
