American Naval Commander and artist (1890-1950), Coale became nationally known for his famous murals and paintings, and implemented the Combat Artists Program in 1941. He was the Navy’s first combat artist on active duty. Vintage glossy 8 x 10 photo of the commander in his uniform, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, “To Ashley T. Cole, With warm regards, Griffith Baily Coale, Commander U. S. N. R. Ret.” Scattered surface impressions and creasing, and some light silvering to the darker areas of the image, otherwise fine condition.
