Greystoke Legend of Tarzan Rick Baker Silverbeard Production Maquette
Greystoke Legend of Tarzan Rick Baker Silverbeard Production Maquette - Director Hugh Hudson is perhaps best known for the classic award-winning "Chariots of Fire". Off the success of this film, he was able to fulfill a life-long dream and make the ultimate mature retelling of the "Tarzan" legend. He did just that in the equally critically and finically successful "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes" (1984). Extreme care was made at all levels to elevate the tale from what had become a parody of itself, back to an emotionally charged saga of survival and what it means to be a "civilized man". Hudson made sure that the ape make-up especially was as realistic as possible, and hired special effects genius Rick Baker to create them. Of great interest was the apes that raise Tarzan from an infant to adolescence, especially that of his primate father, Silverbeard (Peter Elliott). Baker spent a great deal of time to make sure this specific character was able to transfer true love and paternal authority to the young Tarzan without looking like a puppet. He succeeds astonishingly. This is one of the actual production maquettes created to try out various make-up looks and expressions on the Silverbeard character. It was sculpted by Rick Baker's own legendary artist, Steve Wang. This magnificently detailed and life-like miniature maquette has been hand titled "Silverbeard" by Steve Wang, who also signs it on the back. The hand painted and sculpted maquette of Silverbeard is approx 3.5"x3".
