ALS in pencil, signed “M-boy,” two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, no date, but postmarked September 30, 1943. Garbo, then very recently retired, writes to actor Gilbert Roland, whom biographers have recently confirmed was involved in a love affair with the actress in the summer of 1943. In full: “Thank you for your sweet wire. I still don’t know for sure when I will be in N. York but maybe the sixth of October. I shall call the number you gave me and if they ask who is calling I shall say Harriet Brown - that is my new name. If your life is complicated and you are not free to see me, I shall understand. I don’t even know yet where I shall stay. It seems very difficult to find a place, and that is all I can tell you today. I shall like very much to see you again, if it is possible. But I have a feeling that you are not free. But at least I shall try. So perhaps soon.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in pencil by Garbo to “Lieut. Gilbert Roland, Hotel Twenty One Hundred, 2100 Connecticut Ave, Washignton D.C.,” and marked “Special Delivery.” One of the supreme rarities among Hollywood personalities!
