Grenada. 6 Bits ND (1814), KM9, TR G 6 countersta
6 Bits ND (1814), KM9, TR G 6 counterstamped on half of a Mexico 8 bust 8 Reales 1807-Mo-TH. The TR indicates the maker, the G is for Grenada, and the 6 denotes the denomination, 6 Bits or 4 Shillings 6 Pence. This is one of the rarest counterstamped issues of the West Indies. The famous Pridmore Collection (Glendining's 1981) had only an electrotype, Lot 359, which carried a pedigree back to Sotheby's 1912! Spink Auction 78 in 1990, Lot 818, sold the Ray Byrne example (535) with an estimate of 1250 to 1500 Pounds. The current catalog value in the SCWC is $6000 in Very Fine. This example is superb, with deep, boldly executed counterstamps on an attractively toned VF host coin.
