Greene breech loading percussion underhammer rifle, circa 1859- early 1860’s, .53 cal., 35” round barrel, blue finish, wood stock, #NVSN. This rifle is in fine to near mint condition showing approx.. 99% original blue finish, approx. 98% original case colors on hammer and trigger, fine bore, crisp action, sharp address on top rear tang, three barrel bands, iron cleaning rod, two sling swivels and even another cleaning rod in the butt trap of the stock. The wood is overall fine with great metal-to-wood fit and some scattered nicks, mars and scratches from storage. This unusual arm is historically significant as the first bolt action firearm adopted by U. S. Ordinance. Only approx. 1,500 were manufactured for US sale and this one may have been sold to State Militia units through William Read & Sons since there are no visible inspector cartouches on the stock; brass chain and nipple protector also present.
