Western Zhou Period, this Plaque features a zigzag edge, bevel-carvings and incised line designs. Such a complex piece is usually for a magic function, and the mystical designs present and absence of any perforation underscores that use. Ancient Shaman-priests were often magicians as well as healers and trance-readers, as the magic-craft enhanced their reputation. And the magic performed was not just sleight of hand, but divination and fortune-telling as well, and alchemy if they were so inclined. One side of this dark green Jade has been placed near a fire to burn or alter it to a whitish hue....so that the two sides can immediately be distinguished. That way a "heads or tails" effect is created which can be used in Feng Shui decisions or other divinations or manipulations by the Shaman. It must have been kept in a pouch since a suspension cord would interfere with its function when flipping it onto a cloth or rug or making it appear and disappear. A rare item whose function is not well studied in China.
