Greek / Balkan Silver Mount Bichaq c. 20th C
Featured in this lot is this Greek/Balkan silver mount bichaq circa 20th century. The bichaq is a single-edged knife of Turkish origins. It is common in areas controlled by the Ottoman Empire and its immediate neighbors. This knife's blade is either straight, with a tiny forward curvature, like a short yataghan, or, very rarely, with a backwards curve, like a jambiya. The knife shows a metal and silver mount construction. The sheath shows a silver mount construction set over wood, with one side showing stamped floral designs and the other marked with what appears to be a museum numbering mark reading, "D72". The handle shows slight floral stamped designs throughout. The blade shows a very slight curve at the tip and a small groove line running along the top of the blade. The bachaq shows good condition overall with some wear present from its age and use, but no signs of major damage or wear is noted. The bichaq measures 10 5/8" L x 1 1/8" W x 3/4" D and weighs 6 ounces.
