Greatest Story Ever Told Roman Money Changer Plaque
Perhaps the most loved and beautifully realized story of Jesus ever produced was director George Stevens masterwork, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965). Although splendid and spectacular, and filled with one of the biggest all-star casts ever assembled, it was also one of the most realistic and intelligent telling of the story of Christ. In one of the most famous key scenes, Jesus (Max von Sydow) is journeying through Capernaum with followers who have joined him as his disciples, including James the Younger (Michael Anderson, Jr.). There they meet James' brother, Matthew (Roddy McDowell), a wicked man who is stationed with armed soldiers as he forces his own poor people to pay taxes for the Romans. It is there that Jesus speaks to him, and turns him into a believer and one of his most fervent disciples. During this classic scene, we see above them a symbol of power and ill-fated foreshadowing: a giant Roman Coin, which is flanked by two Roman soldiers. It is a warning that all who pass below it must pay a tax or "pay the consequences" which usually meant life imprisonment or death. Matthew also wears a small version of the coin around his neck, delegating him as the tax collector. In the middle of the large overhead coin is the image of Tiberius Caesar, supreme ruler of Rome, with a bordering inscription: TR POT IMPERATOR TIBERIVS CAES DIV AVC, which means: a tribune of the people from the supreme power of the Roman Emperor, Tiberius Caesar. This is the one and only large coin made for this scene. It is beautifully hand crafted in Polyester Resin, and painted "sliver". The large dramatic coin is over 21" in diameter. It comes from the personal collection of Master Prop Master Zoyd Luce who made it as well as many of the iconic props for the movie. This stunning biblical and cinematic rare historic piece of memorabilia comes with a Letter of Provenience from Steward Zoyd, son of the Master Prop maker.
