June 24, 1864 - Certificate reads "Great Western Gold and Silver Mining Company," from the Keyes district. Interesting fine print notes read "Four Feet to Each Share," and "Incorporated November 13, 1863. Certificate is No. 54, for 25 shares. The single vignette shows a mission and smelters, with mountains in the background, and a man and horse in the foreground near a palm tree. It was produced by Towne, Bacon, Printer S.F. The was owned by E.D Meriam. The signatures of the president and secretary are illegible. Stamps cover part of the "Gold" in the title. The Keyes district was incorporated in 1863, and centered around Keyesville, the first settlement in what would eventually become Kern County. -61063
