Great Lakes Woodlands Beadwork Sampler Board c1900
This is an excellent and rare beadwork sampler board from the Great Lakes Woodlands Native American Indians dating to early 1900’s. The board has a hard backing art board or cardboard, which is wrapped in a leather or hide. The beadwork is all loom beaded in a geometric pattern sewn with trade thread and done in glass trade seed beads in colors of Cheyenne pink, semi-transparent rose, butterscotch yellow, black, greasy blue, and semi-transparent green. A sampler board is very uncommon and is a representation of the artist’s total abilities, a showcasing. The piece shows slight bead loss and some fraying of the fringes. Provenance: Found to be an authentic original by an expert in Billings, Montana and from an astounding collection of American Indian beadwork and artifacts from Sheridan, Montana. Measures 15 3/8” by 10 3/8”.
