For your bidding pleasure is this Great Lakes region Native American Indian quilled lidded basket from the mid to early 1900’s. The art of decorating items with porcupine quills is unique to North America. The Native peoples living in the Great Lakes area were doing quill work before the first European contact in 1615. Much sought after, this work was encouraged by French fur traders these Native American peoples-- mostly the Ottawa and Chippewa-- began to place quill decorations on birch bark boxes. In modern times quill work on birch bark boxes is well known and much sought after and highly prized Native American art. This basket is in fair condition, the boxes integrity is good with the lid easily removed. The quills however, have four major spots where the quills have been rubbed off. The decoration shows two maples leaves one green and one red centered on this circular box. The measurements of this box are 5" diameter of lid and 3" height of box with lid.
