This is a very rare and important Great Lakes Native American Indian gunstock and spontoon blade war club. The piece has a stunning example of fish or water serpent effigy carving on a Revolutionary War era rifle stock. The club also has a Revolutionary War (1775-1783) Colonial American Spontoon blade (the hand forged spike head was used during the Revolutionary War by the Americans in trench defense against charging British infantry or cavalry). The metal knife blade transforms the art form carving into a war club weapon. The spontoon blade is held in place with lead or pewter. The fish effigy shape is scarcely seen and an important piece of Great Lakes or Woodland Indian artifacts (Baldwin refers to a similar piece in his ‘Indian War Clubs’ book, page 66). The piece is from circa early 1800 and shows excellent quality carving and good museum condition. From a private large private Michigan Indian collection. Measures 22.5”L x 8.25”W with a 6 1/8”L spontoon blade that is 1.25”W.
