Great Expectations (Universal International, 1946). Lobby Card Set of 8 (11" X 14"). Prior to this adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, Noel Coward had written every film directed by David Lean. Lean confidently announces his solo prowess with a famous and frightening opening sequence in a graveyard. The serialized Dickens story could have run as long as later Lean epics, but the director lives up to his name by crafting a tight two-hour distillation of the familiar story of young Pip, his love Estella and the adults who divide them -- the convict Magwitch and the eccentric (to be kind) Miss Havisham. These lobby cards recall the brilliant set and costume design of the film and feature all of the most memorable characters, including a young Alec Guiness in his first starring role. The title card has slightly rounded corners, and two pinholes appear in one of the cards, but otherwise, the set looks incredibly clean. Very Fine+.
