Great Britain Viking Coinages, Danish East
Viking Coinages, Danish East Anglia (AD 885-915), St Edmund memorial penny (this piece probably struck AD 905-915), S-960, N-483: long, thin alpha "A" cypher inside circle surrounded by a cross-pattee and the legend "SC EADBX" (standing for the Latin "SCE EADMVNDE REX" or the exclamatory "Oh Saint Edmund the King!"); reverse: large cross inside circle, surrounded by a cross-pattee and the legend "BOTECN" in which the "T" is in the form of an "L" inverted (the "T is sometimes read as an "S" and stands for the moneyer Bosecin; however this is a late issue, and the inscription is a copy in homage to that moneyer who struck the original King Edmund pennies). A late issue, on which the "S" is formed by an "L" and an inverted "L" and the inscription is much abbreviated. A splendid coin, about as fine as seen, essentially Gem FDC, on a full flan of good metal and deeply struck, without chips or cracks, the color a beautiful charcoal-gray through which the 10th-century silver luster still "peeks." The legends are entirely bold, as are the rims and circles of the design. A marvelous example of this great Viking/Saxon coin!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
