Great Britain Victoria prooflike Shilling 1858,
Victoria prooflike Shilling 1858, Young Head, S-3904, reeded edge, a mysterious coin which looks at first glance like a Proof, but it has a buckled obverse die, a light circular scratch to left of queen's neck base, to the right a circular diebreak, along with superb cartwheel flash, brilliant "hard" surfaces with a hint of intense gray toning, and is fully mirrored on both sides right into the smallest details and letters. The rim reeding is also deeply impressed on both sides, as would be done for a Proof. Not listed as existing in Proof in the Spink book (which does list a Proof for 1859, however, at £2,750), this may be an extraordinary business strike or possibly a Proof of Record made, curiously, with reeded edging. An exceptional and probably unique coin, no matter what the Royal Mint's intention was in making it. Our estimate is a guess but we have never seen another quite like this extraordinary shilling.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
