Great Britain: Victoria pattern Halfpenny by Wey
Victoria pattern Halfpenny by Weyl 1887, P-2192, Freeman-929 (as R19 in his rarity scale, 2-5 known), bronzed, Plain Edge (not visible in the slab), PR65 BN "Cheshire Collection" NGC, a sensational item created by the German engraver Adolph Weyl, celebrating the British Empire at Queen Victoria's jubilee by using English instead of the traditional Latin for the legends, and including "foreign" animals (elephant, seal and kangaroo) in one of the decorative sides of the reverse shield, along with traditional emblems. Peck believed this pattern, and its relatives, to have been intended for colonial coinages (hence those animals), but as they were never issued he included them in his classic reference on British coins. This is a sensational specimen, a Gem Proof with purplish brown surfaces highlighted by a vivid blue and magenta iridescence, an elegant coin by anyone's standards. Additional comments (also by BL, who catalogued that sale) may be read in the Goldbergs' auction catalogue of the Cheshire Collection (May 30-June 1, 2005, Lot 3136), which was the previous appearance of this wonderful coin. Worth strong bids!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
