Great Britain: Victoria Young Head Proof Shillin
Victoria Young Head Proof Shilling 1842, S-3904, Plain Edge, extremely rare ("R6" was noted on the Spink ticket when this coin was purchased from them by the consignor, he noted to us), now PR64 PCGS, an exquisite and completely original proof with rich, opalescent silvery surfaces and a frosted cameo portrait. Seems under-graded as there are no hairlines or any detractions of any kind, and this piece is pristine. Quite possibly the finest known Proof of record of this early date. Spink catalogue value is $2,500 (approximately $5,000) but this is the only quality specimen ever seen by this cataloguer. Proofs of Record were created each year from 1800 onward, by law intended as examples to be held in museums as examples of the regal coinage of the era. The few specimens that exist in private hands today typically were duplicates traded by the museums that obtained them at issue. (Grading note: the cataloguer remembers seeing this very coin, in a PR65 PCGS slab, about a decade ago; it was then purchased by Spink, who removed it from the slab, after which the current consignor purchased it from Spink, and recently asked PCGS to grade it once again. If two proofs occur on the PCGS population report, a PR65 and a PR64, they are one and the same coin, this specimen.) An important as well as an elegant rarity!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
