Great Britain Queen Anne Shilling 1703-VIGO,
Queen Anne Shilling 1703-VIGO, S-3586, 2nd Bust, Pre-Union type, MS62 Cheshire Collection NGC, a super coin -- Uncirculated and sharply struck with a most pleasing, balanced portrait (details not uneven anywhere), the reverse shield sharp in all four quadrants as well as in the (usually soft) center, luster strongly in evidence, the surfaces a lovely medium gray with ginger-ale hues. The cataloguer does not see even a hint of wear on this piece; in fact, the "62" grade seems conservative as this coin is absolutely choice. The Spink guidebook rates this date almost the same as the scarcer 1702 with this hallmark below the bust (£575 versus £600 in XF grades), but gives no valuation for either date in higher grade because these coins are almost never encountered finer than XF. The Choice AU 1702 piece in our sale #397 (January 2006), Lot 13535, sold in stiff competition for $4,715. This piece, the highest graded Vigo shilling by NGC, has few peers and is even more sharply struck and handsome than that 1702. Among the finest known Vigo-hallmark shillings, with a fine provenance. A classic!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
