<Our item number 138457><B>Great Britain. Pattern Shilling, 1663.</B> ESC-1067A. Charles II, 1660-1685. Struck in copper. Rarity 6. First laureate draped bust of king facing right, as the currency shilling. <I>Reverse</I> Crowned emblems of thistle, lis, harp and rose, in place of &#40;the eventually adopted&#41; cruciform shields design. Interlink C&#39;s in center. Sometimes called a pattern farthing and listed in Peck&#39;s volume &#40;P488&#41; it is, however, generally accepted now that this is a pattern for the first milled shilling of Charles II. The obverse is struck from the adopted shilling die, the reverse is somewhat different from the 1663 currency design.<BR>This is the finest known example of this coin by far. Brilliant prooflike fields and a deep even chocolate color. Just a tiny hint of original luster in the letters of the King&#39;s name &#40;obverse&#41; and in the reverse legend.
