Great Britain. Pattern Penny, 1859. P.2034. Victoria, 1837-1901. Described by Peck as 'Extremely Rare'; Freeman 742- Described by Freeman as Rarity 18 (6-15 pieces known). Struck in cupro-nickel. 19.5 mm. Obverse: Large crown, similar to that featured on the Adelaide Pound. VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REGINA F:D: Reverse; PENNY above numeral 1 and 1859 below. An extremely rare pattern for a decimal coinage, indicating a desire to reduce the size of the denomination and exhibiting an interest in the hard wearing properties of nickel alloys such as had been introduced into the currency of the United States of America in 1856. A sparkling coin with just a few minor surface marks. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated.
