<Our item number 138458><B>Great Britain. Pattern Halfpenny or Touchpiece, Nd.</B> Peck-496. Charles II, 1660-1685. Obverse: Three masted ship in sail. CAR.II.D.G.M.B.FR.ET.HI.REX. 6-pointed star below. <I>Reverse</I> St. Michael piercing the dragon. SOLI DEO GLORIA &#40;Glory To God Alone&#41;. Edge plain. Although this coin is sometimes referred to as a pattern halfpenny it was more likely issued in connection with the touching ceremony.<BR>The coinage of gold Angels having been discontinued, Charles II ordered special pieces to be struck at the Mint for use as touch pieces or healing pieces, to ward off illness and &#39;evil.&#39; The smaller gold coins were made around 1664/5 and it is likely that this copper piece was made at a similar time. Normally, these coins are found pierced, worn or in otherwise poor state of preservation.
