Great Britain: Oliver Cromwell Shilling 1658, S-
Oliver Cromwell Shilling 1658, S-3228, Very Fine, light silvery gray surfaces. This is one of the most curious Cromwell pieces we have come across, for it bears a tiny, incuse punchmarked swan centered neatly below the Protector's portrait. As the coin bears evidence of having been dug up, we are surmising that this is a later silversmith's or jeweler's punch, placed there to indicate good silver. The swan normally is a French hallmark. Possibly this coin was recovered in France, hallmarked there for quality of the silver, and then put back into circulation on the Continent. The swan was also a popular motif in the 1790s in England, when it appeared in the designs of certain tokens. Thus, another possibility is that this piece was recovered in that era, hallmarked and kept as a souvenir of, by then, long lost history. In any case, we do not view the hallmark as a detriment to this coin, but rather as adding to interest in it numismatically. As a VF piece, as well, this coin is certainly of fine quality for the grade. Very scarce, and to our eyes quite desirable.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
