Late Anglo-Saxon coinage, Aethelred II (AD 978-1016), crux penny, S-1148, N-770: bare-headed bust facing left, with a scepter in the left field, AEDELRAED REX ANGLOX, cross ("Anglox" is a variant on "Anglor"); reverse: voided short cross with the letters C R U X in angles, PYNSTAN MO PIN, cross, standing for the moneyer Wynstan at Winchester Mint. A superb example, essentially Gem FDC, on a full flan of good metal and deeply struck, without chips or cracks and with a remarkable portrait, the inner circles crisp, the outer circles high and deeply struck, the color a beautiful and well-set medieval gray with golden iridescent highlights. So well preserved that even the 1000-year-old die-tooling marks remain intact. A great, late Anglo-Saxon coin!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
