<B>James II overdate Fourpence 1687/6,</B></I> S-3414. A Maundy piece but these early milled issues circulated heavily for centuries (see the example in the pervious lot, for instance), with the result that today it is nearly impossible to locate an intact, original, matched Maundy Set. Occasionally an exceptional single piece shows up, but rarely the biggest coin, the 4d, as we have here in this lot. Uncirculated, light silvery gold toning over original, pearl-white mint luster, faint tin-flecks (metal impurities, which are typical of this period). Lists in the 2007 Spink guide book in EF grade for $90 in that condition.
