James I (1603-25) unite. S-2619. Second coinage. Forth bust. Cinquefoil mm, struck 1613-15. One of the most popular portraits of all the English hammered gold, so often seen as "Scottish" in its feel and very much related to the Scots portrait coinages. It seems as if the king is advancing from his homeland on England, already in possession of the orb and sceptre, instruments of office. The sceptre looks like a sword, but in fact King James abhorred swords as he was attacked by a group of noblemen brandishing these weapons, early in his reign while out hunting, and nearly killed, and thereafter disliked even looking at a sword! This coin is a pleasing EF, or GVF in English parlance, with a nice flan, full legends, good details in the portrait and shield, and pleasing gold color.
