Henry VIII (1509-47) half sovereign. S-2294. Pellet inside annulet mm (#56), struck 1544-47. Third coinage. Good EF in British terms, but essentially an Uncirculated coin showing no wear, gleaming luster, overall a very presentable strike, a fairly large flan and almost complete lettering. Small abrasions, not to be confused with a considerable number of die-lines showing in the open areas. The king's face, importantly, is well detailed. The gown around his legs is somewhat soft in detail, as are the lion and unicorn on the reverse. Aside from a couple of soft spots, the legends are delightfully legible. This is one of the rarities of his fascinating and historic reign, and in this cataloguer's opinion it is among the nicest specimens to be had. Others exist showing more detail but they tend to lack the fresh luster which this coin has in abundance. A prize for the fastidious and knowing gold collector!
