Henry VI, 1st reign (1422-61) gold Quarter-noble, S-1811, lis mm (struck intermittently from 1422-60), trefoil below shield, London mint, Good EF, lustrous on a full flan with unusual sharpness of legends as well as in the centers -- finer than the Spink value catalogue's plate coin. Exceptional eye appeal, too.

Historical note: while the Lis mm was employed variously through this Lancastrian reign at the London mint, and was also used at York, on the groats it appeared only in 1460, and thus may well have been used at that time on this piece -- making it a transitional issue, for the crown transferred to Edward IV, of the House of York, late in the year and the Lis mm was again used by Edward for four years beginning in 1461 at London. The reverse legend EXALTABITUR IN GLORIA ("He shall be exalted in glory") appears on all quarter-nobles.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
