<Our item number 119068><B>Great Britain. Groat, ND.</B> S.2199. Henry VII, 1485-1509. Mint mark greyhound&#39;s head &#40;1502-1504&#41;. Nicely toned, and with a good portrait, this is one of the last &#39;facing bust&#39; groats. The later &#39;profile&#39; busts heralded a more lifelike portrayal of the Tudor monarchs. <B>PCGS graded EF-45.</B> <BR><BR>The Groat was first issued in England in 1279 under king Edward I. The word comes from the Austrian groschen, French gros tournois, and Italian grosso meaning large. This at the time was a large silver coin.
