A century-and-a-half before the French Revolution cast the continent of kings into chaos, a royal head rolled in Merrie old England. Charles I was loathed for his taxes and his apparent Catholic sympathies, and found himself at war with his own parliament. After their triumph (and a coup) the Parliamentarians tried him for treason. Charles was slain by decapitation at the end of January, 1649, and England became a European rarity: a republic, sans monarch.

This fabulous gold coin bears the unfortunate monarch’s effigy alongside the denomination in shillings, V or 5, and on the reverse, the royal arms, incorporating the rampant lion of Scotland, the Irish harp, and the mingled fleur-de-lis and treble lions of England. This coin in aureate splendour heralded perhaps the most turbulent time in the annals of the British Isles, a relic that plumbs the treasury of history.

Coin is .9170 Fine and Contains 0.0723ozt Pure.
