Great Britain: George III Regency period, 'Phoen
George III Regency period, "Phoenix rising" gold token "10/6" or Half Guinea 1812, Dalton-37, struck for Younge, Wilsons & Younge, of Sheffield, Yorkshire, the foundry town famous the world over for its silverwork (swords, plate, etc.). One of just two types known (from 3 issuers) of tokens of this denomination, and quite rare. We featured a glorious and exceedingly rare Proof in our last sale. This time we are so privileged to offer yet another excellent piece, very rare in quality and coming from a fabulous collection, therefore now pedigreed: AU55 Terner Registry PCGS. It sports prooflike fields, huge deep denticles that offset and highlight the design on each side, minimal abrasions (proving by their presence, however, its commercial use -- this was no mere bauble made for collectors, but a genuine specie piece struck during the Napoleonic Wars when royal-issued gold had all but disappeared from circulation as it was being hoarded). As well, this delightful specimen is blessed with premium gold toning and glittering surfaces. A great, historic coin! For price reference, we note an XF in a London sale last year that fetched approximately $4,000. This should be worth much more than that piece, which the cataloguer once owned and knows well; it falls far short in quality compared to this specimen (which the cataloguer also once owned, and placed in the Terner Collection years ago).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
