Great Britain. George II Crown 1732 Roses & Plumes in Proof. S-3686. Y George II Crown 1732 Roses & Plumes in Proof. S-3686. Young laureate Bust. Edge Plain but not viewable in the slab. PR64 PCGS: Superb Choice Proof, elegant deep bluish gray toning with reflective surfaces showing beneath the color, a medallic-quality strike showing the king's periwig and shoulder ornament in intense detail, as well as all features in the reverse design. High denticled rims. One tiny mark on the king's cheek and a few scattered tiny abrasions on the obverse. The reverse is mark-free and equally stunning in appearance (all the letters of the legend being slightly doubled). Iridescent hues of blue and purple, lilac and gold, enhance the visual beauty of this great crown. An important early 18th-century Proof (see comment about the early Proofs under our offering of the 1746 Proof halfcrown). Mintage unknown but very small, this coin probably being R4 overall, rarer still in this stunning condition. Anyone interested in owning this coin should take a few minutes to read the historical summary given in the Spink 2005 reference, on page 365, for it provides insights into the politics and economics of this transitional era; among them, the fact that George II, who was the only son of the German king George I of England, was the first Hanoverian to live in England, speak English as a native tongue and, in the middle of his life, lead British troops personally into battle, at Dettingen in 1743. It was also the last time any English monarch appeared on any battlefield among his troops. George loved his wife (it was said, a rarity in that age), was fond of music, and had a passion for the military; and it was his navy which led many raids on Spanish vessels in quest of treasure (Admiral Anson's being the most famous) and sent English privateers across the waves masquerading as pirates and seeking to deprive England's enemies of treasures which might otherwise be used to fight Britain in future wars. When George II died in 1760, after a long and adventure-filled reign, his sons had pre-deceased him and the throne passed to his grandson, who became one of the most famous English kings, called George III.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers, and all other information should be considered preliminary. Lot:22125
