George I "Prince Elector" gold Guinea 1714, S-3628, rare one-year type, Choice XF-AU, unusually nice for this grade level with broad, deep denticles, a lovely balanced sharp strike, some luster, and almost no marks worthy of mention. This is one of the cataloguer's (BL's) favorite guineas, for its sheer elegance of style, as well as its special emphasis on the new Hanover prince's status as elector of the Holy Roman Empire -- a title in Europe of more significance than his inherited title as king of England. Hanover was the crossroads of central Europe in the early 18th century, providing King George with special intelligence about matters of state interest, because all mail passed through his domain and was regularly opened, read and monitored. It was not by accident therefore that England had special insights into European affairs!

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
