Charles I (1625-49) Unite, S-2685, N-2147, Lis mintmark as used in 1625 at the Tower Mint, XF40 NGC. Well considered by the grading company because this is an exceptionally balanced piece, on a full and nearly round flan, the engraving detailed and well preserved, the color a most pleasing, mellow gold. Patches of verdigris in the legend's letters, here and there. The surfaces are exceptional. Parliament had not yet wrested control of much of anything from the king, in this his first year of reign, and here he is depicted in his Coronation Robes. His scrawny face bears the long, pointed beard. Chillingly, the reverse legend translates to read, in English, "united kingdoms flourish." Charles' halcyon days were short lived as the kingdom's unity evaporated about 15 years after this piece was minted. Should be worth all or more of Spink catalogue value for an "English VF" as this is far finer than most.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
