Great Britain: Celtic coinage, Queen Boudicca, S
Celtic coinage, Queen Boudicca, "Silver Unit" (Penny), S-434, VA-794.1, 1.3 grams, right-facing head, fanciful horse on reverse, pleasing VF, light gray toning. Van Arsdell (Celtic Coinage of Britain, Spink 1989) points out that this interesting piece traces the inspiration for its Celtic portrait to the Roman republican denarii of one or possibly two issues of circa 58-46 B.C., while the reverse symbolism is clearly archaic Greek in inspiration. Its place in numismatic history is that of a link between the endlessly studied ancients and the less understood pennies of the Anglo-Saxons. The histories of the Celts and of many Anglo-Saxon issuers of money remain cloaked in the unknown. Their coins are more than a peek at their reigns, deserving of study and contemplation. This piece is a common one yet it is well centered and struck, its portrait distinctly varying from that illustrated in each cited reference.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
