Victoria Young Head pattern Half Sovereign 1884, struck in silver, not listed in any reference but evidently R7, exceedingly rare. Reeded Edge. PR64 Terner Registry PCGS, a Choice Proof with rich gray and mauve toning. Reverse type is unique among Victorian patterns, seemingly unknown even in the Royal Mint and the Queen's collections, owing its inspiration to the Lewis Pingo pattern Third Guinea (Wilson-Rasmussen #138) of 1797-98. The reverse consists of a shield made of four ovals, each with an incuse outline, inside of which are the raised emblems of England (two opposing shields with the 3 leopards upon each), Scotland and Ireland. These differ from the Pingo shields but are identically formed within the shield design. Atop each shield, protruding to the outer circle by the rim, is a crown. The standard outer legend is as shown in our photo. Beading encircles all. The open angles surrounding and between the shields are raised and pebbled, while the broad outer circle inside the beading is recessed and prooflike (as are the backgrounds of each of the 4 shields). All in all, the design makes for a gorgeous presentation of the emblems of majesty. It's a pity this design was never adopted, for it would have been popular and a wonderful addition to the iconography of Victorian coinage. Here indeed is an incredible opportunity to acquire something truly precious of great rarity, which also enjoys an excellent provenance from the Terner Collection.
Ex Goldbergs Sale 25, Lot 1309, Terner sale 2, its first American appearance at auction.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
