Gray Morrow - IF SF Digest Cover Original Art, dated November, 1965 (Galaxy, 1965). Gray Morrow painted this spartan SF space traveling scene for Fred Saberhagen's story, "Masque of the Red Shift." The spacecraft doesn't have much in the way of creature comforts, just a chair, but since the voyager is a Berserker, that's all that is needed! This novelette was set in Saberhagen's popular "Berserker" universe; the Berserkers, alien-built killing machines, seek proof of human hero Johann Karlson's death, after Johann had defeated them at the Stone Place. One of the Berserkers, disguised as a human prisoner, forces a ship to land at the palace of Karlson's brother, Felipe Nogara, where Johann's corpse has been laid out. Gray's acrylic on board painting has a 12" x 16" image area, and the art is in Excellent condition. The artist has signed the piece at the lower right. From the collection of Richard and Wendy Pini. Richard says: "I had thought that Gray Morrow only did comics-related work; I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had also made a name in science fiction illustration. Added to that was the fact that he illustrated a scene from Fred Saberhagen's 'Berserker' series (one of my favorites)."
