It is the largest and most commanding component in a complex of images and objects all focused on asserting the power and prerogatives of the ruler. In addition to incorporating specific portraits in full-figural form, façade components also combine sequences of motifs which often use an isolated image to stand for a complex of meanings. This latter is found here. Specifically royal references here are the elephant head and the royal head, designated by its headgear. The figures holding drinking horns could represent either royal personages or retainers. The frog tokens fertility, in this case an omen for royal fertility, and is probably to be read in conjunction with the female figure supporting her breasts with her hands. The larger post is in generally good condition, while on the smaller the lowest elephant head is two-thirds rotted away and several recent chip losses are present.

Provenance: Gary Hendershott, Little Rock
TAD Tribal Art & Design (Taylor A.
