This lot includes eight original prints from the 1786-1796 encyclopedia by Grasset Saint Sauveur. The prints all depict the Iroquois Native American Indians, and include "Guerrier Iroquois" - Iroquois Warrior, "Iroquois allant ala Decouverte" - Iroquois on the warpath, "Sauvage Iroquois" - Wild Iroquois, "Grand Chef de Guerriers Iroquois" - Grand Chief of Iroquois Warriors, "Sauvagesse Iroquois" - Wild Iroquois, "Tongleur Iroquois" - Medicine Man, "Guerrier de Nootka" - Nootka Warrior, and "Pretre Medecin de la Californie" - A Priest of California. The fantastic hand colored prints are accompanied by a text of early Iroquois culture. These prints are exceptionally rare, and adding to their value is the fact that every publication of the encyclopedia did not include the prints. Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was a French diplomat who served in Egypt amongst other postings. A prolific author and illustrator, he made a long career of studying and depicting the costumes and habits of the peoples of the world, and consistently derived his work from published voyage accounts including those of Cook, La Pérouse, Wilson and other celebrated voyagers. He died in Paris in 1810, his lifetime coinciding with a unprecedented age of discovery in the Pacific.Saint-Sauveur openly acknowledged his use of voyage accounts as they added authenticity to his depictions of exotic peoples. Overall, the prints show very good condition, especially for the age. Each print measures 9 5/8" x 6 7/8".
