<B>Grant & Wilson and Samuel J. Tilden: Actual Electoral College Ballots</B></I>. The elegant cards were actually placed in a ballot box by the Electors to confirm the popular election results. They are highly sought-after by collectors, and among the most prized of paper political items. The Tilden in this lot is obviously a “fantasy piece” that was prepared in anticipation of the confirmation of the 1876 Democratic nominee who won the popular election. But an infamous “back room” deal in which Hayes agreed to withdraw Federal troops from the South resulted in the presidency being awarded to him. All three cards are in near mint condition.
