Grand Forks County,Dakota North - c1875 - Dakota Settlment Early Photograph *Territorial* :
A great photo of settler life in an early Dakota Territory settlement. Photograph measures 7 1/”x4 3/4”, beige single matte 11”x9”, high to medium contrast—tends toward the blacks, and the focus is good. There is one spot on the upper central photo. The peripheries are faded. Photographer, J. Berg, worked out of Grand Forks, North Dakota (Mautz). The Dakota Territory was created in 1861 and became a state in 1889. The territory was larger than the present Dakotas, it included portions of Wyoming and Montana. Poor roads, harsh winters, and Native American Tribes, such as the Sioux, kept many settlers from the territory. In 1873 the first railroad arrived, and soon after, large scale farming began in the Red River Valley. Notice the lookout tower in the middle right. Also, upon close inspection, one will recognize a scattering of houses and rock fences built throughout the valley. .
