<B>Imperial Russian Enameled Silver-Gilt Grand Duke Michael Commemorative Badge</B></I><BR><I>By Eduard Johan Kortman, St. Petersburg, 1906</B></I><BR><BR>Designed as a Romanov crown adorned with the orange and black enamel ribbon of the Imperial Order of Saint George, with initial <I>M</B></I> on crossed miniature cannons of oxidized silver and the dates <I>1856-1906</B></I>, and Latin letter <I>L</B></I> for 50 years-2 in. long<BR><I><BR>Michael Nikolaevich (1832-1909)</B></I><BR><BR>Grand Duke Michael was born in Peterhof in 1832, the fourth son of Emperor Nicholas I. As Viceroy of the Caucasus and a general in the Crimean War, he proved a strong and passionate military leader. He conducted a typically lavish grand ducal lifestyle in his many palaces, in St. Petersburg, Tiflis, and in Mikhailovskoe on the Baltic. His summer residence on the estate of Borzhom, now a natural parkland in Georgia, was roughly the size of Holland.<BR><I><BR>Eduard Johan Kortman</B></I><BR><BR>Supplier to the Russian Imperial court, Kortman owned a gold and silver workshop since 1848. Located on Nevsky Prospect, no.34, his firm was renowned for enameled jetons, imperial badges and other fine gold objects.
