IN 1901 AT&SF ran a 64 mile branch line from Williams to the Grand Canyon South Rim. First train ran Sept 17 of 1901. They also built a hotel, El Tovar, just 20 ft from the canyon rim to accommodate the travelers. Competition w/ automobile cause the line to be shut down 1968 w/only three passengers on it's last run. Private investors Max and Thelma Biegerts reopened the line in 1988 and started carrying passengers in 1989 and continues to operate today. It has been entered into the National Register of Historic Places. Arizona Ken Prag Collection
