Grand Army of the Republic Soldier and Wife Portraits on Porcelain. Most people do not associate porcelain with portraiture. However, porcelain portraits were very popular around the end of the 19th century. They are very durable and affordable. This lot features two gorgeous portraits on porcelain and topped with glass. They are both framed in identical brass cases, which feature a hanging hook at the top. The first is a woman, the wife of the soldier who accompanies her in this set. She is seated, wearing a dark green dress with her hair up. She is very much dressed in the late 19th century style of a wealthy woman. The portrait is in good condition with only a few minor flaws. The area where her hair touches the glass has become cloudy and white, also the paint has chipped off in the lower left corner. Also in this lot is a grand portrait of a young Grand Army of the Republic soldier. He is also seated, wearing his full uniform and regalia. His handsome handlebar mustache and stern look mark him as a man of importance. The Grand Army of the Republic was a group of Union Army veterans of the Civil War, which was set up as an official organization in 1866. They served as a relief organization as well as a political one. Five members were chosen to endorse the President of the United States during election years, and for a long while it was impossible to win the election without the GAR's endorsement. This soldier proudly wears his GAR medal and uniform, no doubt a seasoned veteran. The condition of his portrait is excellent, only slight discoloration of the glass in the corners, and one small crack in the lower right corner. A wonderful and interesting lot!
