British champion auto racer (born 1929), winner of the 1966 Indianapolis 500, who, despite surviving many close calls on the track, died in a 1975 plane crash. TLS, one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, July 7, 1967. Letter to a collector which originally accompanied a photo (not included). In part: “Please find enclosed…a photograph taken after I won the race at Indianapolis in 1966. This was obviously one of my more memorable occasions, together with the Grand Prix that I have won, the outstanding two being the 1962 German Grand Prix and the 1965 Monacan Grand Prix. I think that Fangio was probably the most outstanding driver of all time, although Stirling Moss runs him a very close second; if anything, Stirling was a better all-around driver.” In fine condition, with two punch holes to left edge, and typed collector’s notation to top. Pre-certified Steve Grad/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
